Just replaced a 2 year old full HD Toshiba LCD tv with this LED model – Technology marches on and I’d just like to say, improves !

Picture: Sharp and bright, love what it does with freeview HD pictures – was watching some broadcast BBC nature programme, the results were *almost* (of course this model doesn’t have it) 3D with amazing depth to the picture. Blu-ray is not surprisingly, excellent – Overall a step up on the tv it replaces.

Sound: As befitting the modern trend to screens of very shallow depth, there is some compromise with audio – You can tweak the settings, but there is no bass resonance, and can sometimes sound even a little hollow. Loud though – you can crank it up quite loud (it’s rated at 10w+10w) w/o distortion. If direct audio output (ie not redirected through an AV amp) is very important to you, you might want to investigate adding a sound-bar.

Set-up: As easy as pie – after putting together the stand (remember your philips screwdriver) plug in all your hdmi connections and antenna cable, and let the tv menu guide you to set everything up – You’re done in a few minutes, most of that time taken up whilst the set is scanning for channels. Lots of sound and screen adjustments available – from simple presets to equaliser adjustments – so you can fine tune output to your liking – though some of it’s so technical (gamma levels and whatnot) it’s a shame Toshiba doesn’t give you more instruction on how to use these more engineering-led features.

The internet connection was even easier, just plugged in the ethernet cable (you can also buy a wireless dongle if you prefer) and although there’s set-up menus on the set, didn’t need to do anything, it just started to work – really thrilled to get iPlayer on the tv, and fun that you can access You Tube (tried) and Flickr (not yet tried). There’s some On Demand services available on ‘Toshiba Places’ – Toshiba’s own online platform – though if you’ve got Sky/BT/Talk Talk/Virgin you’re not very likely to be tempted away from the OD services available on them.

Overall a 5* effort from Toshiba, a little let down by the ho-hum sound quality but if you manage your expectations on the audio front, you get a great value set that delivers great value results.
